Bachelor of Science (Security)

Course Duration
The degree is completed in trimester mode. Students will need to complete 6 trimesters, 3 trimesters each year. (The course is complete in 2 years, full-time study load)

Credit Points
300 credit points must be successfully undertaken to complete the degree, 150 at each year. Each trimester long subject, (or unit of study) is worth 12.5 credit points. The Research subject, however is worth 25 credit points as it is a double weighted subject load.

Study Load
A full-time study load comprises 4 subjects per trimester. Each subject entails three contact (in class) hours per week, so a full-time load is generally 12 contact hours per week.

2009 course fees/EFTSL (4 units per trimester)
$10,080 or $840 per subject

2010 course fees/EFTSL (4 units per trimester)
$10,380 or $865 per subject

About Security
Security is a rapidly growing profession involving the strategic application of resources including hardware, personnel and procedures to protect and manage assets in a broad range of environments. Security professionals must also comply with strict regulatory requirements including standards, licensing and specific statutory functions.

The modern security professional must be multi-skilled, highly trained, versatile and able to work in a diverse range of areas.

Careers in Security
Graduates of the Institute's Security courses may develop careers in the following areas:

• Security divisions in major public or private enterprises;
• Managing private security firms;
• Emergency management;
• Security, health and safety;
• Risk or hazard management, analysis or assessment;
• Loss prevention;
• Fraud control and revenue protection;
• Healthcare sector; and
• Valuable consignment and banking;

Course Objectives
• knowledge of the key theories and principles of management as they apply to areas of security operations and administration;
• an understanding of legislation and common law that is relevant to the conduct of security operations and the provision of conditions that will ensure security standards are achieved;
• an awareness of the personal, social and economic impact of criminal and/or anti social behaviours;
• the ability to analyse critically the structure, management and operation of public and corporate administration; and
• the skills required to apply theoretical concepts to practical situations in the management of security operations.
