Student Support Unit


The Australian Institute of Public Safety aims to maximise a student's success and enhance quality of life whilst studying for their qualification. We provide current students assistance, advice and support to facilitate the transition through their academic studies.

Students enrolled with us are supported through their studies in the following areas:

  • Educational and course planning;
  • Educational difficulties;
  • Study skills development;
  • Career choice, development or change;
  • Financial guidance and referral;
  • Personal issues concerning areas that may be affecting studies;
  • Employment;
  • Health and nutrition information and advice; and
  • Referral to other services such as legal, medical and accommodation.


The Student Support Unit is available by appointment or by dropping in to the office located adjacent to the student lounge.

Student Welfare

Student support services are available to ensure our students have the educational and physical support they need over the period of their involvement with the Australian Institute of Public Safety.

Students can occasionally experience difficulty with internal and external influences that may impact on them completing their qualifications. In these circumstances they are encouraged to access the confidential services offered by us. Your Student Support Officers are available as the first point of contact to discuss any issues you may have.

In addition, as part of our equity policy, the Australian Institute of Public Safety has in place formal grievance procedures. The grievance procedures aim to ensure that student concerns are addressed and resolved at the earliest possible opportunity to avoid the escalation of problems.

Career and Placement Advice


The Student Support Unit extensively researches relevant employment opportunities and information relating to current career trends. We also work closely with employers and industry to inform students about existing and future employment opportunities and how to apply for these roles. Refer to the Alumni section of the website (http://www.aips.edu.au/alumni/job_vacancies.html) to view current employment opportunites.

Students are also offered expertise in selecting the most appropriate elective subjects to enhance their chances of gaining course related employment upon graduation. We will assist you clarify ideas, provide support in decision making and planning, and can provide you with different perspectives on career related issues.

The Australian Institute of Public Safety provides excellent opportunities for you to engage in final year placements in areas of employment interest. The Student Support Unit will assist you with your placement choice, liaise with your host employer and be in touch with you during your placement period to ensure you are maximising this experience.

 

Resumes, Covering Letters and Interview Skills


The Student Support Unit can assist you with:

Resume Construction: work with you to develop your primary marketing tool to highlight what you have done, the experiences that you have gained and what you can offer a prospective employer. (click here to open resume guide)

Covering Letters: assist you discover the key elements of an employment opportunity in a covering letter, how to get the attention of a prospective employer, create an interest and motivate the employer to interview you. (click here to open covering letters guide)

Key Selection Criteria: help you to identify and summarise the key requirements of a position and map your competencies against key selection criteria. (click here to open key selction criteria guide)

Interview Techniques: assist you understand different methods and styles, the need for thorough interview preparation and offer useful ideas on how to conduct yourself at an interview. (click here to open interview techniques guide)

These services are offered either on an individual basis or workshops throughout the semester, to better prepare you in obtaining a graduate position. They are also helpful for those students interested in part-time or vacation work.
